ISLAMABAD, May 27 : Secretary Information,Broadcasting and National Heritage Muhamamd Azam Wednesday appealed to the general public to generously donate blood in Pakistan Baitul Maal Thalassemia Center so that maximum number of patient children could be provided free of cost treatment. This he said while inaugurating the Information Desk of the Thalassemia Center at Fatima Jinnah F‑9 inaugurated on May 12 by First Lady Begum Kalsoom Nawaz. Muhammad Azam said the recently inaugurated center would play important role in mitigating the sufferings of thalassemic children as they need special medical care. He said that the free treatment at the center would be crucial for those children who were suffering from thalassemia as these patients needed continued treatment of the disease. He said the PBM had already launched many projects and schemes to help the needy and deprived people and Pakistan Thalassemia Center was another landmark achievement.While briefing the Secretary Information Pakistan Baitul Maal Managing Director, Abid Waheed Sheikh said the center has most modern blood bank and laboratory. He said that so far 300 patients have been registered for the blood transfusion and with the passage of time 1,500 patients will be registered.From 8 am to 4 pm, the center's helpline telephone numbers 9230827 and 9230837 would be active.Moreover the PBM Thalassemia Center can be contacted through emails firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com,he said. About Information Desk, he said that patients history, problems records would be kept here and doctors would hold preliminary examine of the patients in Information Desk and then send them to the center for required treatment. Later talking to media Abid Waheed Sheikh said the PBM was established in 1992 by the then and current Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif with the aim to help the poor to come out of the vicious cycle of miseries. Following the vision of Nawaz Sharif,he said,the PBM was significantly contributing towards poverty alleviation through its poor‑focused services and providing assistance to the destitute, widows and orphans.The PBM MD said the organization was providing social protection to the poor and marginalized segments of the society. It was serving the vulnerable people by providing them healthcare and education, irrespective of religion, age, gender, caste, creed or political affiliation. It was also working for women empowerment, he added.
